What is LASIK?

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, more commonly known as LASIK, is vision correction surgery in which your Todani Eye Associates surgeon uses a laser to reshape your cornea (the clear outer dome of your eye). It’s a highly advanced surgery that offers amazing results for people with vision problems like nearsightedness.

Who can have LASIK?

LASIK is for adults only. It corrects three main vision problems, including:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Astigmatism (irregular cornea shape)

After LASIK, you won’t typically need to wear glasses or contacts anymore. But, nearly everyone experiences presbyopia at around the age of 40. Presbyopia causes difficulty with focusing on near objects. LASIK doesn’t correct presbyopia, so you’ll still need reading glasses for close-up viewing after the surgery.

You need healthy corneas to have LASIK, so your surgeon performs a pre-LASIK exam and evaluates corneal thickness before the procedure. If you have a condition that affects your corneas, such as keratoconus, or if you have chronic dry eyes, LASIK may not be right for you.

Some other conditions may exclude you from LASIK surgery candidacy as well. However, Todani Eye Associates can treat your underlying condition effectively, and they offer other types of refractive surgery that could work for you. Your provider can make a personalized recommendation based on your needs.

How does LASIK work?

You’ll receive anesthetic eye drops to keep you comfortable during your surgery. During LASIK, your Todani Eye Associates surgeon uses a state-of-the-art laser to create a small flap in the cornea.

Then, they use a different laser to remove tiny amounts of corneal tissue, remodeling it into the optimal dimensions to correct your vision. After reshaping your cornea, your surgeon repositions the flap to complete your procedure.

The LASIK procedure takes just 10 minutes, and you can return home immediately after.

What is LASIK recovery like?

You don’t need stitches or bandages after surgery. Many people experience clear vision very quickly after their LASIK surgery. Your Todani Eye Associates surgeon explains exactly what to expect as you heal.

You may experience dry eyes temporarily, and you could experience light sensitivity, glare, or other issues for a while. These issues usually go away as you heal in the coming days and weeks.
