What is cornea surgery?

Cornea surgery is a group of surgical procedures that address problems within the cornea — the clear outer layer of the eye covering the iris and pupil. Many different types of damage and disease can affect the cornea, and surgery can effectively resolve those issues and restore your eyesight.

When might I need cornea surgery?

You might need cornea surgery if you have a problem that disrupts your vision or threatens your eye health. Some of the most common reasons to have cornea surgery include:

  • Pterygium (fleshy wedge-shaped growth)
  • Recurrent corneal erosions
  • Keratoconus (cone-shaped cornea)
  • Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy (corneal swelling causing cloudy vision)
  • Corneal exposure
  • Excessive corneal tissue removal during a prior refractive surgery

Cornea surgery is a highly specialized set of procedures that require a skilled surgeon with extensive experience. At Todani Eye Associates, you can get the highest standard of surgical care for excellent results.

What are the different types of cornea surgery?

Todani Eye Associates offers many types of cornea surgery, with some of the most common including:

Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK)

DMEK is a type of partial cornea transplant that treats conditions involving swelling in the endothelium (the innermost layer of the cornea). Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy is a common example of a condition treated with DMEK. In the DMEK procedure, your surgeon replaces the endothelium using donor tissue. This allows your cornea to function normally again.

Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK)

DSAEK, like DMEK, is a partial cornea transplant. The difference between the two procedures is that DSAEK also transfers stroma, a connective tissue in the eye. So, DSAEK transplants are thicker than DMEK transplants.

Pterygium surgery

In pterygium surgery, your surgeon removes the growth from your eye. Todani Eye Associates uses the most advanced pterygium surgery methods to minimize the chances of pterygium regrowth.

Tarsorrhaphy

Tarsorrhaphy is a procedure to connect the top and bottom eyelids. This partly or totally closes the eye, which may be necessary for healing.

There are also a variety of minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedures for cornea problems, such as collagen cross-linking. In the collagen cross-linking procedure, your provider uses special eye drops and ultraviolet light to strengthen your corneas. This procedure can help to prevent the progression of keratoconus.
